Salem Automation News Update APRIL 2009 SALEM AUTOMATION INTRODUCES NEW TITAN LINE OF VIRTUALIZATION SOFTWARE Salem Automation has just finalized a partnership deal with a major defense contractor to enable Salem Automation to deliver the TITAN line of virtualization products to the defense, commercial and manufacturing segment. This new line of virtualization software virtualizes a variety of computer types onto standard HP servers running the Linux operating system. Salem Automation’s Vice-President of Sales & Marketing, Chuck Graham, stated “After a number of months of negotiation to finalize this exclusive agreement, Salem Automation has now broadened its product offering to not only the successful CHARON VAX, CHARON Alpha, NuVAX and NuPDP virtualization solutions but also we now have the entire new line of TITAN virtualizations to integrate as part of a turn-key installed solution for our clients. TITAN virtualization has the capability to extend to other platforms as customer needs arise. One reason we chose to partner up and integrate the TITAN virtualization software for our clients as part of a turnkey solution is TITAN software has proven itself in over 4,000 installations. The TITAN software performs emulation of the legacy hardware as well as offering application translation to new platforms for some types of legacy software.” TITAN Virtualization Supports the following platforms: * Standard TITAN Virtualization for these computers: HP-1000, L-304, CYBER 170, Z-8002, EHSP (ASPRO), IBM AP101F & 4 PI, Mil-Std-1750A, AYK-14, TI-2520, AAMP, Milli/131, CLC * Optimized TITAN Virtualization with greatly improved performance is available for these computers: PowerPC, I960, 80X86, 68060 * TITAN Application Transport to new LINUX 64 Bit HP Itanium Server environment: MIPS IV Irix, Alpha Tru64 UNIX, SPARC - Prototype IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT TITAN, CALL CHUCK GRAHAM AT SALEM AUTOMATION, (336) 661- 0890, EXT. 106 OR EMAIL: TITANSALES@SALEMAUTOMATION.COM. SALEM AUTOMATION COMPLETES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CHARON VAX INSTALLATION! Mobile Energy (a division of DTE in Mobile, AL) had an “End of Life” situation with their DEC VAX 4000/Model 106A. Since the VAX hardware was no longer being supported by HP, each day brought new concerns about possible catastrophic failures causing unplanned production downtime. Upon reviewing the VAX system information provided by Mobile’s IT staff, Salem Automation’s (SAI) technical team specified the CHARON XM virtualization software running on an HP DL 380 with 4 GB of memory, 5160 CPU (3.33 MHz) and six 72 GB 10K RPM high speed SAS drives. Based on Salem Automation’s customer references reviewed by Aulston Hildreth as well as price and performance considerations, Gene McCarty, Site Manager for Mobile Energy, authorized purchase of the proposed system. After the HP DL 380 was delivered to SAI headquarters in Winston-Salem, NC, the SAI technical staff installed the CHARON software and configured the Virtual CHARON VAX system to match the existing VAX 4000/106 system. Once Salem’s technical staff completed initial testing, Mobile Energy was able to remotely connect into their virtual VAX and conduct system testing. With the successful completion of the testing, the onsite installation was scheduled and the server shipped. Once onsite, Greg Snider, Salem Automation CHARON Product Specialist, installed the new server, refreshed the data and trained the system manager. After about one day of testing, Mr. Hildreth authorized the replacement of the VAX 4000 system with the new CHARON-VAX server. This switchover to the new virtual CHARON VAX was so seamless that several users asked when the new system was to be installed. Upon learning that they were already running on the new system, everyone was very pleased at this effortless transition on their part. There was no retraining necessary, no new commands to learn, no conversion errors to track down and fix! “The installation and data conversion could not have been better,” Mr. Hildreth said. “Greg used a combination of CHARON and VAX experience and technical thoroughness that allowed the conversion to exceed our expectations.” WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR COMPANY TO BE SALEM AUTOMATION’S NEXT CHARON SUCCESS STORY? The CHARON emulators allow you to move your entire VMS, RSX, or TRU64 UNIX operating system and applications over to the new CHARON environment unmodified. Source code is not required, but if you have it, your IT staff can continue to modify and support your applications on the CHARON virtualization as you do now. Users will not even know you have moved to the CHARON virtual system, except their applications will run considerably faster under CHARON software! Salem Automation has installed well over 400 of these CHARON systems in a variety of applications, so CHARON virtualization provides a very low risk option for continuing to use your system for another 10 years or more. Generally, if you are under a hardware maintenance contract, a turnkey CHARON emulator can be justified with a 6 to 18 month payback! Total time from purchase to installation can be as little as three weeks for a CHARON virtualization system. GIVE SALEM AUTOMATION A CALL AT (336) 661-0890, EXT 106 OR EMAIL: CHARON_SALES@SALEMAUTOMATION.COM Disaster Recovery Planning What if… 1. Your geographic area experienced a natural disaster, such as a hurricane or tornado? 2. Your company had a fire, flood, explosion or computer room water leak? 3. Your computer system suddenly stopped working and will not restart? For IT departments, the above events would mean the inability to provide and support critical functions of the company. It may mean loss of data and processing capabilities. The above situations might render your CHARON VAX or CHARON Alpha system inoperable! What should you do, or what should you have done in anticipation of this situation? Disaster Recovery (DR) plans and systems can be very simple to very elaborate and expensive. Large organizations set up complete data centers, with data streaming real time to hot site fully operational DR locations. At the other end of the business spectrum, a small company may backup critical files daily or weekly, with the actual data storage being the local bank vault or the owner’s garage! Salem Automation can provide assistance for your CHARON systems in several distinct ways. The SAI DR Kit will get your CHARON system up and running in a very short time. If SAI did the original setup of your CHARON VAX or CHARON Alpha system, we can create a system DR setup disk that includes CHARON VAX or ALPHA software, virtual disk drives and the CONFIG file. Using the CHARON DR key (see page 6 of this newsletter) and this recovery setup disk, you can reload CHARON software to another server, use the DR setup disk on this server and began restoring data from your backup files. Your CHARON system and your VAX software will be up and running within a short period of time! IF YOU WOULD LIKE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT CHARON DR SOLUTION, CALL SALEM AUTOMATION: (336) 661- 0890, EXT. 106 OR YOUR LOCAL SAI REP. LET US HELP YOU SET UP A CHARON DR PLAN BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!
